About Brady

On a seemingly random Tuesday in mid July mommy and Daddy went to the doctor for what was supposed to be a regular pregnancy checkup. We were 28 weeks and 3 days along in this journey and thus far there had been no complications. A typical visit to this doctor involved a 30 to 45 minute wait in the waiting area and then another 30 minutes waiting on him in a patient room. On this Tuesday, however, he came in not 10 minutes after we got in our room.

My first thought was “Wow he must not be very busy today!” but I would soon learn that wasn’t the case. He pointed out that Mommy’s blood pressure was 163/102, she had a high count of protein in her urine, and she also gained more weight than expected since the last visit (4 weeks prior). All of these are signs of a disease called pre-eclampsia. Due to the nature of the disease he wanted to send us to Candler Hospital for more extensive tests over 24 hours. This was not an official diagnosis – only a warning that the symptoms were all there.

We drive to Candler and checkin to our room. Note that this is the first time that Mommy has been admitted to a hospital – ever! Not long after arrival the tests begin and a few monitors are attached for obvious reasons. One is simply for her blood pressure, one for her heart rate, and another for Brady’s heart rate. The next morning Mommy’s doctor came by to check on her and look at the monitor results. He noticed some decelerations in Brady’s heart-rate and decided that this was too risky to stay at Candler. We were then transferred to Memorial Hospital which is well known for it’s Neonatal Intensive Care.

My assumption was that this was done just to be pre-cautious. With an infants life on the line you can’t ever be too pre-cautious. That said we are transferred early in the morning and arrive to the new hospital. There we meet the doctors who will be assisting with the tests and diagnosis. It is there that they do an ultrasound to check on Brady a little closer. Unfortunately this ultrasound reveals that there is a big problem with our little girl. There is a reverse blood flow along the placenta causing Brady not to grow like she should. This is a big problem because this can be severely detrimental to an infant’s chances of living. The doctors highly advised us to consider an emergency cesarean section.

Mid-day we enter into the operating room for the surgery. Everything goes well and Brady is born weighing in at a whopping 1lb 7oz and 11 3/4in long. Man that’s tiny! She’s cleaned up and quickly presented, all bundled up, to Mommy and Daddy in the operating room. We’re officially parents! Wow!

We had an incredible amount of family and friends supporting and praying for us throughout these incredible 2 days (and beyond!). We couldn’t have gotten this far without the strength and power of our Father in Heaven. The next couple of months will be hard with us living at home without our little Brady but we know she’s in great care. Keep us lifted up during this process because I’m sure there will be ups and downs. We can’t wait to bring her home and have our first restless night with her!

Hey Erik and Nikkie! I work at the church with Erik and I just wanted you both to know that I am praying for you and little Brady! When you shared the first initial pictures with the staff here, seeing the Brady that we’ve been so diligently praying for and how small she is truly touched my heart! I’m thankful for the opportunity to pray for you guys and I hope you will share more pictures with us as she continues to grow stronger every day!

Much love and blessings to you and your family!

    Dearest Nikki and family,
My heart and prayers go out to you and your family. It was a few years ago(28 exact), but we went through the same thing that you are going through. Brian weighed 2lbs. 9 ounces. Memorial is the absolutley the best place Brady could be. Keep your faith strong and your chin up. I remember people would tell me, I know what you are going through and I would think, unless they have been in this situation they really dont………..SO believe me,,,,,,,I know what you are going through.
My heart, my love and my prayers are with you. If you need someone to talk to or just a shoulder to lean on, I am HERE……….

    Love, Mrs. Sandy Talley

Dear family I’ve just put brady on my church prayer list (Christ Church of Marion County) for long distance thoughts and prayer. Since most of us are senior citizens we have many years experience of talking and sharing with the Lord the needs of others. Kathy barefoot of pooler requested these prayers on behalf of your daughter. God bless your family.

    Dear Nikkie,

We may not see you guys much these days but your entire family including this precious baby girl are now and will forever be part of our “Family of God”. I can’t believe that you are a Mom! Wow! Then again, I can’t believe that I am a grandmother either (Matt has a new baby boy as well). All of our little “Rothwell kids” have all grown up :)

All of us from the Rogers family send you lots of love and buckets of prayers for little Brady Faith and her Mom and Dad.
Without a doubt she is going to be a beauty like her Mom – both in looks and in spirit. Plus, she surely has a good bit of her aunt and grandmother in her as well which will give her lots of spunk and a fighting spirit for sure!!

    Hang in there girl…..

You probably know Ernesto from Church. My name is Amie, and I am his wife. I also had this terrible condition during the latter part of my pregnancy with our first born, Sayanna. She is now almost 8 years old. I remember exactly the feelings that your body goes through, and it is scary. But the Lord is so good, and he brought us through just like he will you guys. We are all praying for your family, and little Brady is beautiful. Also, to encourage you, I have a cousin who was around 1.5 lbs. when she was born. She is a beautiful, healthy, smart, vibrant young lady now! May God bless you and comfort you during this time. May he give you strength, health and peace!

Thinking about you all the time. What a wonderful blessing. In a couple of years all this will be behind you and you will say,”just think, she was a preemie”. She will be running around and talking your heads off.

You can never give her enough hugs or tell her how wonderful she is.

My cousin Vicki (Erin Garrett’s mom, ahh,I can’t remember Erin’s married name) sent me this link asking for prayer. Just know that I’ll be passing this on to many of my prayer friends here in “gold country” in the Sierra foothills of California. It’s clear that you all have a deep abiding faith and your little Brady is in good hands, our Lord’s. I’m a teacher and have had many students who were preemies. It may be rough at first, but before you know it she’ll be in kindergarten! I’ll be thinking of you.

Actually I “stumbled upon” this blog and just wanted to drop a note that Mom, Dad and Brady are precious to the Lord and are being prayed for. I have two daughters myself, although all grown-up now, they are so precious to us. I pray you have many years ahead of enjoying God’s gift to you.

    August 5th, 2008 at 2:04 am

I can’t believe you are a mom! Congrats! I am praying for your sweet daughter everyday. Being a parent is really the most wonderful gift God could give two people and I can’t wait until ya’ll can take her home and have many fun crazy years ahead of you. Love you girl and stay strong and take lots of pictures to look back on because you will look back one day and even with the pics you wont believe all of this is real.

Nikkie and Erik,Our prayers are with you all during this trying time of waiting to take your little bundle of joy home. It won’t be long before you can and then come all the fun. Your home will be filled with more noise, toys, clothes and more than anything LOVE. The two of you will start to wonder what you did before Brady was born with you free time. Nikkie, Happy birthday to you a little late. Jimmy and I were out of town celebrating our anniversary at the same time you were celebrating being 25. It is so hard to believe that Heather and you are Mommies. It was like yesterday we were having the two of you going to Pooler Elementary for the first day of school. May God bless you and your family.

    Love, Nora

I just wanted you to know that your baby girl is in wonderful hands. It does not seem that 31 years ago my niece was transported to Memorial for neonatal care. She was just born at St. Joseph’s and had several life threatening issues and doctors immediately sent her to to MMC. I can’t say enough about the fantastic care of the doctors and nurses. I have 2 grown daughters and this niece has 3 children!! God has blessed us in so many ways. I am praying that he will always shed His Almighty Grace on your growing family.

About this blog

Brady Faith was brought into this world 12 weeks premature. This was a result of mommy having pre-eclampsia and there being a reverse blood flow to/from the placenta. Brady wasn't growing like she should and it would have just gotten worse. She weighed 1lb 7oz and was 11 3/4in long. To learn more about Brady and her family click here.
